Rogerthorpe Manor Wedding Photographer – Saturday’s wedding saw me heading out to South Yorkshire land to photograph the big day of Bex and Mike – and what a fab day it was.
I’d photographed a wedding the day before so was feeling pretty tired when I woke up at 7am to leave for Selby but – a couple of pints of good coffee saw me through the early morning bleariness and I was off!
Mike and his boys were getting ready on a new estate in Selby – my sat nav didn’t know said estate – add to that a closed section of main road around that area and you have the makings of navigation mayhem! After 3 re-routes – sat nav put his hands up and said ‘Does not Compute’! Luckily, I always carry full contact details for all of the main players at any wedding and it wasn’t long before our groom was talking me in to the landing strip outside his house!
We did our usual routine helping the boys get ready – they were all fingers these lads! It was raining outside but we managed to get some really cool shots using simple window light in the kitchen and really focused on the characters of these men who had all been friends for a long time – in fact our groom Mike had chosen to have 3 best men as he simply couldn’t decide!
We left Mike and the boys behind and drove over to hook up with our bride Bex who was getting ready with her family a few miles away – no sat nav issues here and we sailed straight in. I’m sure Bex won’t mind me telling you this – well, she had managed to break her ankle on her hen do so instead of her glam wedding shoes – she would mainly be wearing an inflatable air brace on her wedding day!
Regardless of this minor detail – Bex was in totally top form and sporting a cool set of minnie Mouse PJs when i arrived! One of her bridesmaids had been one of my brides a couple of years ago so it was great to catch up with familiar faces then it was down to business!
We’d allowed extra time for Bex to get ready due to her ankle but she didn’t need any persuading when it was finally time for her to get into her gown – and she looked totally gorgeous once she was ready!
It was still raining when I left the bride to head to the church so I knew I had to be prepared to light the church for the formal group shots we had planned for after the wedding ceremony. I usually have my assistant photographer Hannah with me at every wedding and she is not only a great shooter but an extra pair of hands for all of the gear we trawl around with but sadly on this wedding day, Han was really poorly with tonsillitis so image how amazing I felt carrying ALL THE GEAR down what I think was quite possibly England’s longest church path!
I made it in the end (and yes, i do hear that tiny violin you’re playing for me right now!) and got not only my lights set up but also my ‘Roboassistant’ – essentially a remote camera which fires when my main camera fires. This allowed me to get the perspective of having 2 photographers at the wedding when i was flying solo – very cool stuff!
The wedding ceremony was lovely and the look on Mike’s face when he first saw Bex was priceless. We took care of the first half of the formal group shots inside the church and then headed over to Rogerthorpe Manor for the rest of the day’s celebrations.
Rogerhorpe Manor is a really lovely spot, in fact this was my first visit to shoot there and I was so impressed with the whole package they offer – Bex and Mike had chosen their venue with great discernment. The weather had broken by the time all the guests arrived so it was great to capture some very laid back images in the gardens and finish up the bigger group shots in a much more relaxed environment.
Dinner was served and then speeches were delivered – all 3 best men gave great performances and Father of the Bride and our groom, Mike gave great speeches too. It’s amazing how what may seem like some of the least likely candidates really shine when speeches come around – I saw Mike as a more reserved, quiet guy – but man oh man – did his speech fly!
We headed into the night with some great ‘Penny Drop Session’ photos around the grounds of the hotel whilst the party guests were arriving and then headed back inside to start the dancing off! Mike lit up the dance floor as he carried the performance for his hobbling bride during their first dance – legend!
This was a lovely wedding to shoot. Shooting at new venue like Rogerthorpe Manor always inspires my eye and working with such a lovely couple and their family/friends was a real joy.
We wish Bex and Mike all the very best for their married life together, we’ll be seeing them in just a few weeks to showcase their wedding photography for them.
